Short description: |
The physical chemistry course is to lay foundations in thermodynamics, thermochemistry, chemical equilibrium, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics and to present how to use in practice the laws describing physicochemical phenomena. These fundamental laws are then used In other branches of chemistry: organic and analytical chemistry, technology and biochemistry. |
||
Full description: |
The course comprises: - The first, the second and the third laws of thermodynamics, state functions, phenomenological and molecular interpretation of energy and entropy, Gibbs energy, conditions of equilibrium - Entalphy changes heat capacities and basis of thermochemistry - Partial molar quantities and chemical potential of pure substance and substance in the mixture, - Ideal and real solutions - Thermodynamics of phase equilibria. Phase diagrams for one- and many-component systems; zeotrops, azeotrops, eutectics, partially miscible solutions, - Thermodynamics of mixtures - Colligative properties of the solutions - Chemical equilibrium, the equilibrium constant and its temperature dependence, relation to Gibbs standard function, free entalpy of reaction - Kinetic theory of gases, van der Waals equation - Introduction to thermodynamics of irreversible processes |

Learning outcomes: |
After the course student: - knows the basic terms and how to use them in thermodynamics, thermochemistry, chemical kinetics, electrochemistry, - knows the main relationships in Physical Chemistry and how to use them, - knows the basis of fundamental physicochemical processes, - is able a direction of physicochemical processes after the change of various parameters, like temperature, pressure, concentration, potential, - knows which experimental methods one can use in studies of physicochemical processes, is able to determine the fundamental physicochemical parameters from experimental data - is able to interpret experimental data and infer appropriate conclusions. |
||
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
The exam after each semester is in the written form. It is composed of 2 parts: test ( it is necessary to explain the answer chosen) and 7 open questions. The exam duration: 120 min. To pass the exam, the student has to receive 50% of total allocated points. |
