Short description:

Description of the course: General characterization of biotechnological methods used in the protection of the environment. Elimination of contaminants in gaseous, liquid and solid wastes involving the use of mixed populations of microorganisms. Bioremediation of soils, heaps and sediments using microorganisms. Use of bacteriophages in wastewater treatment processes and to evaluate the effectiveness of membrane separation processes.

Full description:

Lecture topics: Biodiversity of microorganisms (species, morphological, structural, genetic, metabolic, behavioural, ecological). The use of microorganisms in environmental biotechnology and in protection of the environment. Survey of methods for purifying different types of wastewaters, rendering wastewater deposits harmless, removing biogenous elements from wastewaters with biological methods. Self-purification of waters. Complex rending harmless of industrial and communal wastes - production of biogas, composting. Use of biological filters to remove air contaminants. Bioremediation of soils and areas polluted with various contaminants. Biotechnology of desulphurisation of coal and crude oil, microbiological leaching of metals. Biotechnological processes in potable water conditioning. Use of bacteriophages in wastewater treatment processes, including the evaluation of the efficacy of the removal of human enteroviruses in membrane processes leading to water treatment in wastewater treatment plants, and to evaluate the effectiveness of membrane separation processes. Phages as biological agents for control: membrane biofouling, foaming in activated sludge plants, sludge dewatering, and identification and reduction of pathogenic bacteria.

Program of laboratory classes: Purification of communal and industrial wastewaters in reactors with the use of activated sludge. The role of microorganisms in wastewater treatment process, the characteristics of activated sludge method. Basic methods of measurement of wastewater parameters and control of microbial activity in the clearance proces. Biodiversity of bacteria living in activated sludge and their practical application for biodegradation of toxic compounds. Identification and determination of the number of bacteriophages infecting the intestinal bacteria as an ISO standard in determining the quality of water. Waste water as a potential source of isolation of new bacterial viruses for use in bacteriophage therapy. Bioremediation of soil contaminated with petroleum products and selected industrial sludge under aerobic conditions with the use of specially selected microorganisms, monitoring of pollution degradation rate.
