The course deals with theoretical and empirical issues related to the processes of globalisation, challenges, opportunities and risks associated with them (such as the most important problems of the modern world) and global education - educational solution to these problems.
The course focuses on the global and development education, which enjoys a growing interest in the world and in Poland (in 2009, it has been incorporated into the curriculum). Global education is defined in many ways, for instance as a wider, global dimension of citizenship education, designed to make people aware of global interdependencies and global phenomena.
The course familiarizes students with the assumptions, goals, models, and different theoretical approaches in the field of global education, as well as with topics closely related to these issues, such as globalization, development, debates on development, contestation of globalization ant anti-globalisation movements etc. Ideological foundation of global education, its possibilities and limitations will also be discussed.
1. Globalisation: its nature, dimensions, causes and consequences.
2. The most important problems of the modern world: poverty, social inequalities, wars and conflicts, gender mainstreaming, access to education, global risks - terrorism, violation of human rights, environmental devastation.
3. Millenium Development Goals, growth and sustainable development, debates on development, development discourse. Development aid or development cooperation?
4. Global education: debates, goals and objectives, models, policies, initiatives etc. in the field of global education - in Poland and worldwide. Global Education Week: assumptions, implementation, successes, demands, criticism, projects review. Global education or global citizenship education? Education for sustainable development. By the end of the course, student will be able to analyse processes of globalization in multidimensional way (as a political, economic, social, cultural and technological phenomenon), to indicate the various consequences of these phenomena, especially in the context of education, and assess them. Student will know and understand a contemporary dilemmas present in ongoing discourse on globalization, development and development cooperation. Student will also be able to make a critical analysis and synthesis of different models and approaches in the field of global education, and understand a need to take social and educational activities in this area. In terms of attitudes the aim of the course is to enhance the sense of responsibility and citizenship in a global world and a commitment to social change and building a sustainable world.
