Short description:

This course aims at providing students with an understanding of the fundaments and skills required in the pursuit of building one’s own business. Key concepts of entrepreneurship and leadership will be discussed, including the processes underlying the development of innovation and the role of academia in entrepreneurship.

Full description:

The course will be divided into four main topics which will be discussed during classes:

• An introduction to entrepreneurship – What defines successful entrepreneurs, and what common characteristics do they possess? What is the importance of leadership and how have models of start-up management evolved over time?

• Academic entrepreneurship & start-ups – The triple helix model and the dynamics of interactions within the university, industry and government. The University of Warsaw as an entrepreneurial university. Support mechanisms offered by the university in business creation.

• The innovating firm – characteristics and managerial aspects of innovative business firms. Developing firm-specific competencies and capabilities: market-based vs. resource-based. R&D internationalization / globalization.

• Formulation of plans and goals – key-components of a company’s strategy. Vision and mission statement formulation. The necessity and creation of a business plan.

Learning outcomes:

Students who successfully complete the course will possess the following learning outcomes:

• The ability of demonstrating specialist knowledge on the role and opportunities provided by the university in supporting entrepreneurship

• The ability of formulating a vision and mission statement

• The ability of creating a company-specific strategy

• The ability to assess key factors influencing a company’s success, both on a macro and a micro scale

• The application of the above mentioned points while drafting a business plan

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The course will be graded via a business plan written by students reflecting the topics discussed during the lectures.
