Students read critically texts of the comparative semantics, recognize basic facts for different levels of Polish language compared with the other languages.

Short description:

The aim of the lecture is to present selected issues connected with comparative semantics. During the lecture the linguistics research methodologies will be discussed: structural (semantic fields theory, direct components analysis) and cognitive (the linguistic picture of the world, interpretative framework, conceptual metaphor). Research projects will be presented: EUROJOS and "Comparative lexical semantics". There will be also raised issues conneced with pragmatics in contrastive perspective.

Full description:

The course covers following issues:

1. History of linguistic and semantic study - main directions in semantics and their development.

2. Structural semantics: semantic fields, direct components analysis, structural definition.

3. Comparative study - basic issues.

4. Cognitive semantics: language as a cognitive phenomenon, the notion of connotation, embodied metaphor, interpretative framework theory.

5. Contemporary comparative semantics researches - fields, methodology, achievements.

6. Comparative semantics in practise: "Comparative lexical semantics" project and EUROJOS.

7. Names of colours in contrastive perspective.

8. Names of dimensions in contrastive perspective.

9. Seeing and thinking in contrastive perspective.

10. How to talk about emotions in various languages.

11. In semantic framework - problems with creating wordnets in various languages.

12. Interpretative framework in contrastive perspective. FrameNet project.

13. Metaphor and culture.

14. Pragmatics in contrastive perspective.

Learning outcomes:

A student who has completed the course:

- analyzes semantic structure of the Polish expressions in comparison with another languages,

- implements discussed methodologies of semantic analysis,

- recognizes the metaphore in the different types of discourse,

- discusses the problems presented in the literature.
