Short description:

The main aim of the seminar is to prepare students to write a BA thesis dealing with a chosen Russian realistic prose work of the 19th century. Students’ knowledge about Russian literature and its historical and cultural context is systematized and broadened, what helps them to choose their thesis’ topic, prepare its plan and bibliography.

Full description:

The seminar is designed to broaden and deepen the knowledge of realistic Russian prose, as well as to encourage reflection on the realism itself. Therefore, the course will discuss meanings of this category and their transformations, as well as various ways of presenting reality in literary works. In particular, students will get acquainted with the development of realistic trends in Russian literature, which will allow them to make a more conscious choice of the topic of the BA thesis.

The seminar will also systematize students’ knowledge about the historical and cultural context of the era, in order to enable students to write a thesis devoted to the links between literature and other aspects of cultural and social life.

An important part of the course is the technical preparation to write the BA thesis and acquiring practical skills, such as analyzing literary text, summarizing academic writings, presenting different points of view, defining research problem, offering logical arguments etc.

Learning outcomes:

KNOWLEDGE

Student:

- has systematic knowledge about Russian realistic prose, especially on works that are the subject of their research;

- knows the most important arguments of the theoretical and historical works discussed at classes;

- knows the basic Polish and Russian literary terminology;

- knows and understands basic categories and research methods used to analyze, interpret and evaluate a literary work;

- knows basic rules of writing and editing an academic paper.

SKILLS

Student:

- is able to prepare plan and bibliography of his paper;

- is able to make notes of academic works they read and to use them in the proper way in his thesis;

- has adequate research skills in analyzing and interpreting a literary work at the level of topics and problems, genre, composition and style;

- is able to use proper literary terminology when talking and writing about literary phenomena and processes.

SOCIAL COMPETENCES

Student:

- is aware of the level of their knowledge and skills, can complete and master them;

- is able to plan his work and work systematically;

- respects the rules of copyright.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Preparation for the classes; activity; presenting the plan, bibliography and one chapter of the BA thesis

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
