An outline of the history of 20th-century European and American art. The course aims to present selected problems of the art culture of the period compared to contemporary trends in the humanities.
The subject of the course is the history of modern art from the first decade to the second half of the 20th century. Artistic output will be analysed in terms of the cultural, social and ideological changes of the period. Problems discussed in class will include: sources of modernity, the role of “primitivism” in 20th-century art, the avant-garde as a key artistic tradition, the changing paradigm of the avant-garde, problems of representation and non-objective art, negation and “anti-art” programmes, art and ideology.
