Section 1. Introduction

• Key concepts and problems of migration studies

• The overview of migration theories

• The overview of integration theories, policy approaches and implementation practices

Section 2. Characteristics of migration to/from/within the UE and legal frameworks

• Migration in Europe: history, changes in migrant stocks, flows and responses (policy and social attitudes)

• EU legal and institutional framework regarding migration and migrant integration

• Other supranational and international regulations regarding migration and migrant integration (e.g. The 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1967 Protocol)

Section 3. Comparative analysis of migration and migrant integration in EU states (in UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Spain/Portugal, Poland and others states of the Visegrad Group, the Baltic states)

Section 4. Patterns, changes and predictions

• “Fortress Europe”, discourses of (in)security and reintroducing the borders

• “Migration crisis” - migration, social construction and institutional responses

• Muslim migrants in Europe – attitudes towards Muslims and coping with a stigma

• (Super)diversity vs reinforcement of the integration and social cohesion paradigm

• The case study of Brexit – causes and consequences in relation to migration and migrant integration

• New trends and forecasts in light of political, economic and socio-demographic changes

Metody dydaktyczne:

Introductory talks including Power Point presentations, small group discussions, general discussions, consultation, analysing video and textual materials, writing essays/preparing presentations and assignments. Apart from reading and discussing the course materials, various assignments will be offered such as quizzes and case studies (also on-line).
