Students will be required to submit reaction papers each week in which

they will provide thoughtful discussion of the respective programs in

terms of but not limited to: accuracy of portrayed diagnosis, observations

of treatment protocols, ethical violations, and the consequences of film

content in terms of public perception of mental illness and/or treatment.

Finally students will include their summation of how they would, in their

professional capacity, address film messages in regard to popular public

perceptions.

In addition, because the material presented is film, attendance is

necessary to have access to the selected films and engage in associated

subsequent discussions. Therefore, students will be assessed upon

attendance and participation as part of their professional development

and critical thinking.

Writing Assignments

There will be four writing assignments. One per week related to the

material previewed and discussed weekly. All written assignments are

expected to be completed and submitted at the beginning of class on the

scheduled date. Plagiarism and/or fabrication like cheating can result in

referral to Judicial Affairs and can result in immediate dismissal from

this University.

All papers must adhere to current professional guidelines and

must be submitted on the time and date given in this syllabus. All late

papers will have one letter grade deducted for each day late. Papers

placed in the Instructor’s mailbox or under his door will similarly be

considered late and will have grades deducted dependent upon when the

Instructor actually finds the paper. The only excuses considered for a late

paper will be a verifiable medical excuse specifically stating the students’

inability to attend class OR a verifiable death in the family. “Verifiable”

means written proof. Weddings, graduations, family reunions,

celebrations, tiger tamings, revolutions, ship launchings, missed busses,

grounded aircraft, derailed trains, cars with flat tires, unreliable friends or

roommates, unrequited love, or printers that do not print, and discs that

do not work are NOT verifiable excuses. The same conditions govern all

examination as well as papers and group projects.

Reaction Papers:

This course has four writing requirements. There are no quizzes or exams.

Each week the student will be required to submit a reaction paper. Each

paper will be generated by the respective mediums reviewed in and out

of class. For each paper, the student will be required to submit a

thoughtful discussion of the respective message related but not limited

to: the accuracy of portrayed diagnosis, observations of treatment

protocols, ethical violations, consequences of film content in terms of

public perception of mental illness and/or treatment. Finally students will

include their summation of how they would, in their professional capacity,

address film messages in regard to popular public perceptions.

Due: All papers will be due at the beginning of the first class following the

previous week's film presentations.

Defining "the beginning of class".

The "beginning of class" is the moment I begin that day's lecture. If you

arrive late to class your paper has arrived late as well and will be

deducted 5 points for that day. 5 points per day will be deducted per day

late. Plan accordingly. In other words if you wait until the last minute to

print your paper before class and run into a snag you are out of luck. Be

prepared and make sure you have your final draft printed the day BEFORE

it is due. This will avoid any unfortunate problems such as losing 5 points

from your paper!

That is also what is commonly referred to as a hint.

And Now, A Word About Grades

Grades and grading represent an imperfect measure of knowledge and

ability. We are never as dumb or as smart as we too often allow ourselves

to believe. Grades are useful only in terms of the degree to which they

can instruct the student about strengths and weaknesses as well as the

degree to which they serve to motivate the student to increase effort and

explore potential. Grades though important should not be the primary

reason or reward of scholarship. It should be remembered that a grade

of “C” is a fine grade and indicates the student has met all the basic

requirements of a given course. Everything above that point indicates

some level of achievement or understanding that exceeds the average

expectations of the course. While it is likely that everyone taking this

course has the potential to earn the highest grades, the difference

between grades is more often reflective of differing experience and

communicative skills rather than only intellect. Thus the difference may

rest in effort and attention to detail. In a writing sensitive course such as

this, such effort and attention can be rewarded and enhanced by paying

close attention to the writing tips and guidelines included in this syllabus.

That is what is commonly referred to as another hint.

Class Participation:

This course is designed to foster discussion related to relevant issues

raised in each of the film offerings. In addition, and more importantly,

viewing the films offered in class are "pretty essential" (those hints just

keep coming) so you need to be there in order to react and offer input.

Students are encouraged to add insights, opinions, and questions and will

be assessed upon participation.

Grading:

A total of 200 points may be earned through two examinations, two

reaction papers, a group presentation/project, and class participation.

The breakdown of points will be as follows:

Four Reaction Papers: 40 points each

Attendance: 20

Class Participation: 20

Translated to:

190-200 = 5!

177-189 = 5

165-176 = 4.5

153-164 = 4

140-152 = 3.5

120-139 = 3

119 and less = Fail

Any questions regarding grades or grading must be addressed in a timely

fashion. Because of the compressed nature of this course it is incumbent

upon the student to address concerns and/or questions immediately.

Attendance rules This is a four-week condensed elective course with little if any outside

reading. The overwhelming majority of relevant material will be

presented, reviewed, and discussed in class. Outside sources for material

will not be made available unless the student can demonstrate some

exigent circumstance that would merit such consideration. In short any

class absence can be very problematic for you in terms of missed material

and your final grade.

I strongly advise attending all classes if you hope to do well in this course.

With that said, you are all adults, and my philosophy is that each of you,

as adults and scholars, are responsible for your own education. I assume

each enrolled student is mature, committed to learning, and capable of

informed decision making. Thus, I expect each student will assume

personal responsibility for his/her actions. To that end, any absences are

your responsibility to navigate in terms of missed material and or

assignments. Such responsibility is yours; not mine. If you elect to not

attend a class you are still responsible for any assignments, exams, or

presentations scheduled for that date. Due dates of all writing

assignments are not “optional” and I do not provide extra credit

assignments or other non-assigned projects to bolster grades resulting

from absences. To put this simply, this is a film course. If you miss the

film presented I do not provide any opportunity to make up that missed

material.

In addition, because the films are discussed in class before and after each

screening it is imperative to be in attendance. Participation and

attendance thus become a significant component of demonstrating

understanding and assessing grading in such a course. I do understand

that you have lives and, as a result, each student is allowed to (but it is not

wise to) miss two classes. Again, this is a film course and your presence at

every screening is essential to your success. If you cannot manage such a

rigorous demand I advise against enrolling. If your grade suffers as a

result of your class absence(s) the earned grade is not negotiable.

Class Attendance:

Because this is a film course, it is the only course in which I take

attendance. You are expected to be there and be on time. Arriving late to

a film is rude and inconsiderate to your peers. (Tired of these hints yet?) I

will not make any of the presented films available for viewing outside of

class. Class attendance is one key to success in this course. Coming to

every class is the EASIEST way to do well in this course. And yes that is

also another hint!

Travel Plans and Course Schedule

I am fully aware that the scheduling of this course will take us right up to

the time when visions of sandy beaches and travel holidays may invade

your dreams. I can appreciate that and share the fondness sand in the

toes and/or mountain air and the three of exploring new places. With that

said, heed my advice and be sure to book any travel plans for after the

completion of this course. This is more than a suggestion because I will

not entertain any pleas for consideration of exceptions to the course

schedule to accommodate your travel plans.

I have years of experience working with W.I.S.P. students and so I know

you are all intelligent and have had the opportunity to review this syllabus

prior to enrolling in this class. Because of that, please do not ask me

about special consideration for early departure and/or alternatives to the

scheduled final exam. I am not going to entertain such requests.

Before you condemn me as a fiend with a heart of flint, let me remind you

that you are taking a graduate level course and it would be

fundamentally unethical of me to allow such non-hardship considerations

for those who wish to leave early because of travel plans while not

extending the same courtesy to those who will be remaining to complete

the course requirements. In addition, such early departure requests are

an imposition as they create extra work for me in terms of designing

different yet equitable tests and protecting the integrity of those exams. I

am much too lazy.

Sooooo, the take-away message is this; before you enroll make sure you

are aware of your obligations and responsibilities in regard to the

schedule of this course.

This filmography represents examples of some past films and programs

used within the context of the course and serves as a general guide to the

nature of films anticipated though the actual list will likely be altered.

Each film will in turn serve as the basis of discussion and comparative

written analysis. Typical films have included: The Madness of King George,

The Snakepit, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Temple Grandin, Harvey,

An Incredible Mind, Tommy, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Prince of Tides,

The Fisher King, Girl Interrupted, What About Bob, Nell, Psycho, State of

Mind, Freudian Eyebrow. A sampling of popular television programs will

likely also be featured including but not limited to: The Simpsons, The Bob

Newhart Show, The Sopranos, Dexter, In Treatment, My Mad Fat Diary,

and House. If logistics permit, students will also be exposed to a selection

of short stories, comics, and graphic novels as well as musical forms.

A series of popular mediums including but not limited to; films, television,

music, and literature will be introduced for examination, review, and

discussion. The class will discuss each film and individual students will be

responsible for topical reaction papers. Grading will be based upon

attendance, class participation, and writing assignments.
