History of the idea of modernity and related concepts such as emancipation, individual, progress, Enlightenment, from Renaissance to the Contemporary, in the context of history of modern developments of human being, as fundaments and sources of the idea of sustainable development. |

The course comprises of the following components: 1. Introduction: modernity and the idea of sustainable development. 2. Modernity in time and space. 3. The modern and the non-modern ways of life. 4. Renaissance: Pico della Mirandola, Machiavelli and Bacon. 5. Reformation and Early Capitalism. 6. The conquest of the World: Columbus and Others. Colonialism. 7. Enlightenment: From Locke to Rousseau. 8. Romanticism – the Return of the Repressed. 9. Hegel and Marx. Developments of emancipation. 10. From Romanticism to Modernism. Nietzsche. 11. Emancipation in the 19th - 20th Centuries. Liberalism, feminism, marxism. 12. Modernism. The Age of Great Ideas and Wars. 13. Postcolonial movement. Modernity outside the West. 14. Post-modernity. 15. Contemporary Status of Modernity. |

Efekty uczenia się: |
Students will learn to analize, identify and critically discuss with reference to history of ideas and universal history the following concepts: modernity, emancipation, globalisation, capitalism, progress, Enlightenment, Reformation, colonialism, imperialism, West, centres/peripheries, Romanticism, Hegelianism, Marxism, liberalism, feminism, modernism, and post-modernism. |
Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
Students will be required to write a short paper on a prescribed theme that will be the basis of the assessment. Attendance is mandatory. |
