The main objective of the course is to provide student with the recent knowledge in the field of behavioural addictions, their etiologic models, diagnostic tools, therapeutic and prevention activities as well as the most recent research in the field.

The course introduces students to the theoretical frameworks of

behavioural addictions, in particular: gambling, compulsive behaviours

(compulsive shopping, compulsive exercising, compulsive sex) and

Internet Addiction. Furthermore, the course will provide a broad

perspective of: diagnostic criteria in DSM IV and DSM V, as well as the

main difference between DSM and ICD classification. Students will

deepen their knowledge by searching for 2 articles in Journal of

Behavioural addictions and then presenting them in front of the class.

Further, students will search for a prevention program (eg. TV spot) and

discuss critically which strategies does it use and to which extend can it be

1. Rosenberg, K. & Feder, L. (2015). BEHAVIORAL ADDICTIONS Criteria,

Evidence, and Treatment. Elsevier

2. A chosen list of articles related to some of the topics (not all of them).

The book chapters and obligatory articles will be either provided

directly or there will be indication where to download them

3. Course materials will cover teacher’s presentations (some of the

content will not be covered by neither the book or articles).

At the end of the classes students will:

1. Understand and will be able to discuss different aspects of

behavioural addictions, among others how behavioural addiction

differ and in which way are similar to substance addictions;

2. Explain and discuss different theories explaining addictions (e.g.

individual, social, environmental);

3. Be able to discuss the addictive features of various behaviours, in

particular those related to new media and technology;

4. Understand and be able to discuss which prevention strategies could

work based on the theoretical underpinnings;

The final assessment will be based on three components – presentation

of a chosen article, choice of a prevention program and its critical analysis

and a test. In order to pass the course students will have to accomplish at

least 51% of each type of activity.

presentation of a chosen article (25%) - in groups of max. 2 to choose an

articles from Journal of Behavioural Addictions and discuss it. This task

requires a meeting with the teacher in order to agree on the details of the

activity. The topics are noted as ‘presentation opportunity’. A max of two

groups per day. The presentation will be more interactive than a typical

article based presentation. Details will be discussed during classes.

The test and quizzes (25% quizzes 25% test) – quizzes (a set of 10-12

questions, max 1 open but short, the rest closed), the test ( mixed type of

questions: open questions and closed questions). There will be a short

quiz from each topic (after each topic). The purpose is to provide an

immediate feedback and to discuss arising issues. One quiz will not be

taken into consideration for the final evaluation (automatically the worst


Homework/activity (25%) – searching for a prevention program (e.g. TV

spot etc), preparing a critical analysis at home and presenting the findings

during the class (short ppt presentation or otherwise). Requires meeting

with the teacher prior to the presentation.

Attendance rules

No more than 2 unexcused absences for this course are allowed. In case

of missing activities which are graded – additional work will be required.

An additional 2 absences are permitted only with a formal excuse. Missing

more than 4 classes results in not passing the course.
