Sexology – in theory and clinical practice. Diagnosis and treatment of

sexual dysfunctions and sexual disorders – gender identity disorders,

sexual preferences disorders, disorders associated with sexual

development and orientation.

The main aim of the course is to present the theoretical basis of clinical

sexology and teach how to diagnose, understand and attempt to treat

patients with sexual dysfunctions and disorders – paying attention to both

– somatic and psychological aspects of human sexuality.

The emphasis of the course is on the practical understanding of classifying

sexual problems – their etiology, symptoms and interdisciplinary


Topic to be discussed include: history and fields of sexology, sex vs.

gender, human sexual response cycle, sexual anatomy and physiology,

classification of sexual disorders and dysfunctions.

Learning outcomes

The student knows the theoretical basis of clinical diagnosis of sexual

disorders and dysfunctions.

The student is able to differentiate etiology and symptoms, knows the

methods of treatment for disorders of human sexuality.

Literature: Knowledge of assigned readings is expected, as well as active

participation and intellectual engagement when it is discussed during


Research focus or Case study presentation: The students will

a/ be asked to write a one page handout of data and discussion-provoking

ideas and issues based on assigned literature;

b/ be assigned to present a case study/ case studies – on the multiaxial

diagnostic system.


During last class – a multiple-choice test on readings, materials and

cases presented during class.

Attendance rules

Regular attendance and participation are mandatory; attendance will be

recorded. Every student is allowed to miss 1 meeting, more than 1 missed

class, rules out the possibility to pass the course.
