(tylko po angielsku) This course explores the relationship between broadly understood protest literature and mid-20th and 21st-century movements for change and justice in the United States: from civil rights and anti-war movements to Black Lives Matter and environmental justice movements. We will explore a variety of genres, including manifestos, essays, speeches, reportages, short stories, protest poetry and songs as well as photographs and posters, addressing their aesthetic, political, rhetorical, and performative functions. Some of the authors and artists whose works we will discuss include James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, Beat generation writers, Nina Simone, Patti Smith, Michael Herr, Juliana Spahr, and Ta-Nehisi Coates. |

(tylko po angielsku) This course explores the relationship between broadly understood protest literature and mid-20th and 21st-century movements for change and justice in the United States: from civil rights and anti-war movements to Black Lives Matter and environmental justice movements. Examining the functions of protest literature "on and off the page," we will consider how it can voice social critique, empower individuals and communities, and contribute to cultural change. We will explore a variety of genres, including manifestos, essays, pamphlets, speeches, reportage, short stories, protest poetry and songs as well as visual materials (mainly photographs and posters), addressing their aesthetic, political, rhetorical, and performative functions. Some of the authors and artists whose works we will discuss include James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, Beat generation writers, Nina Simone, Patti Smith, Michael Herr, Juliana Spahr, and Ta-Nehisi Coates. |

Efekty uczenia się: |
(tylko po angielsku) Upon completion of this course, students should: - understand the relationship between American protest literature and the discussed movements for change and justice in the US - gain knowledge about the discussed works and the historical contexts in which they were created - gain knowledge about complex relationship between various forms of dissent and subversion in literature and society - display an increased fluency in close reading and text analysis - display an increased ability to critically engage with literary texts and visual materials - be able to write an argumentative and well-structured research paper |
Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
(tylko po angielsku) This is an intensive and research-based course, which brings together literary, cultural, and historical contexts. Apart from active participation in classes, students are required to do research on the selected topic under the instructor's guidance. The total percentage of each student’s final grade will be determined according to the following scale: 20% active class participation 20% in-class presentation 20 % annotated bibliography 40% final research paper (ca. 15 pages) |
