Skrócony opis: |
(tylko po angielsku) Building on the recent “archival turn” in literary and cultural studies – which was coupled with an intensified effort to digitize archival collections – this course offers students a unique opportunity to explore online archives of some of the most prominent nineteenth and twentieth-century American authors and become familiar with the most recent developments in digital humanities. |
Pełny opis: |
(tylko po angielsku) Bridging theory and practice, this course broadens students’ understanding of how literary texts are produced and gives them valuable insight into compositional practice and the process of manuscript drafting and revising. Students will learn to navigate digital collections at Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute, for instance, to see how archival work can enrich their research and writing practice. We will read literature with and through the archive, looking at published and unpublished works, correspondence, scrapbooks, personal papers or photographs relating to Emily Dickinson, Frederick Douglass, and Gertrude Stein, among others. |

Active class participation – which includes thorough preparation for every meeting, involvement in class discussions and research projects, seeking guidance from the instructor when necessary – is as significant for each student’s final grade as their written assignments. This means that students are expected to work for their final grade consistently throughout the semester. The total percentage of each student’s final grade will be determined according to the following scale: 30% class participation 40% archive-related research projects 30% final essay |
