The programme of the module is divided into four stages. Stage I consists of weeks 1-3 which are introductory lectures on the historical dynamics of the region. Stage II (weeks 4-8) includes the analysis of conflicts which have taken place since the end of the cold war. Student task: in this stage each student chooses one conflict and prepares a presentation. Stage III (weeks 9-11) combines theory with practices. Weeks 9-11 are dedicated to introductory lectures on basics of international negotiations. During Week 12 students put their knowledge into practice and conduct simulations (under the coordinator’s supervision) of negotiations of one of the previously analysed conflicts (Nagorno-Karabakh). Stage IV (week 13): Students take an exam which will have a form of negotiations. |

This module aims at providing participants with general knowledge about management of organisations and processes with special focus on managerial techniques and methods applicable to humanitarian action. It also offers insight to main differences in managing various types of organisations, including public sector, private sector and charities. Another important aspect of this course is focus on managerial innovations that might be particularly useful in day-to-day activities of humanitarian aid organisations. This module is based on open formula, including direct involvement of participants and adjusting detailed scope of the course to their needs. |

The objective of the course is to introduce students to research methods of social science applicable in both academic study of humanitarian action and the practice thereof. Skills and knowledge obtained during this course should in particular be useful in designing and conducting evaluation studies of humanitarian intervention, completing need assessments in the field, analysing policy objectives, and collaborating with specialised research agencies. As designing and conducting empirical research requires both knowledge and skill, the main principle of the course is to combine theoretical discussion of research methodology with practical training involving both fieldwork and data analysis. To that end students will be asked to participate in research exercises and conduct a research project of their own. |

The course is an excellent opportunity to familiarize yourselves with the problem of mass atrocities prevention. Students analyze historical and contemporary examples of international crimes. They study models of committing genocide and analyze their stages in comparative perspective. The purpose is to identify internal and international actors who can contribute to structural and operational prevention as well as instruments, which can be used in this area. What are roles of states, international organizations and individuals? What measures can be used before, during and after the armed conflict to prevent mass atrocities? |

The overall objective of the module is to provide an insight into necessary public health actions at emergency and other humanitarian crisis. Health is a basic human right and emergency situation (both sudden as well as protracted crisis) has always a negative impact on health of people involved. A prompt and relevant coordinated help may mitigate serious health risk and alleviate long term consequences affecting physical and mental status. Graduates should be able to actively participate in managerial activities and support field work on-site. The module will deliver necessary knowledge – both sociological and medical aspects of needs assessment and methods of sustaining those needs. The vital aim is to equip students with a “tool box” of practical solutions since a crisis involves prompt actions. |
