Master's level course.

The aim of this course is to present modern macroeconomic methods and models used both by researchers and analysts to understand and predict macroeconomic phenomena. Upon completion students will be able to use acquired tools to explain and interpret the workings of the macroeconomy at an advanced level.

The course is composed of three parts. The first part is devoted to the microfoundations of modern macroeconomic models. The second part covers core growth facts and theories. The third part is devoted to analyzing and modeling business cycles phenomena and labor market issues.

Evaluation is based on closed book mid-term exam and final exam. Students can earn additional points by completing homework assignments.

The course introduces students to important topics in advanced microeconomics. The course has two concurrent parts: Game Theory and General Equilibrium. The former discussess game theory and its applications, while the latter introduces production and consumption theory concepts in order to provide a coherent picture for the general equilibrium framework.

Completing the course requires passing the mid-term and final exam, respective to both parts of the course (4 exams in total).

Celem przedmiotu jest zapoznanie studentów z podstawowymi informacjami z zakresu prawa autorskiego oraz wybranymi ogólnymi aspektami prawa własności przemysłowej. Uczestnik zajęć nabędzie wiedzy o źródłach prawa i podstawowych pojęciach dotyczących praw własności intelektualnej oraz będzie mógł w podstawowym zakresie je zastosować. Po wykładzie student będzie miał świadomość zakresu stosowania ochrony własności intelektualnej (w szczególności w zakresie prawa autorskiego) i złożoność tych zagadnień.

W roku akademickim 2020/21 w związku z sytuacją epidemiologiczną wykłady odbywają się zdalnie.

The course is the graduate lecture in international trade policy. Its focus will be on new trends in the theory of trade policy. The course is offered in English in the winter term. The objective of the course is to acquaint participants with international trade policy issues. The topics covered will include analysis of instruments of trade policy under perfect and imperfect competition, and the political economy of trade policy. Another objective of the course is to help students explore potential thesis topics in these areas. Grading will be based on the final exam that will count for 50 % of the final grade and the research paper will count for the remaining 50 % (The outline and the first paper draft count a combined 20%, and the final version counts 30% towards the final grade). This course constitutes the first part of the graduate sequence in international trade (followed by International Trade Policy next term). While its focus is on recent trends in the theory of international trade the empirical validity of different theories is also explored. This course is designed mainly for Master of Arts in International Economics Program, however foreign exchange students visiting the Department of Economics at Warsaw University are also welcome to participate. Polish students with good knowledge of English from other specialization fields can enroll subject to instructor's approval. The course is offered in the spring term. The class meets once a week for two hours.

The course objective is to give a comprehensive presentation of main topics in monetary economics: monetary theory, its empirical formulations and their econometric tests. Part one consists of the introduction to monetary economics and of the presentation of three approaches to incorporate money into general equilibrium models. Part two covers the impact of monetary policy on the economy at the macro-level in the short run. Part three focuses on the demand for money with special attention paid to its empirical aspects. Finally, part four deals with supply of money and the central banking.

Method of assessment:

Assessment is 100% by final written exam. The exam will consist of a mixture of short essay type questions and problems. Students choose 2 out of 4 essay-type questions and 2 out of 4 problems.

Skrócony opis

Program studiów magisterskich International Economics obejmuje seminarium badawcze i seminarium dyplomowe. Seminarium badawcze jest na pierwszym roku studiów.

Celem seminarium badawczego jest zaprezentowanie studentom najwyższej jakości badań, pokazanie im, jak korzystać z narzędzi, o których uczyli się na innych przedmiotach, oraz nauczenie ich samodzielnego prowadzenia i opisywania badań. Aby osiągnąć te cele, studenci biorą udział w seminariach, na których zaproszeni naukowcy (np. z MFW, Banku Światowego, Narodowego Banku Polskiego, instytutów badawczych, innych uniwersytetów) prezentują swoje prace. Drugą częścią kursu są spotkania grupowe, podczas których studenci omawiają seminaria, w których uczestniczyli, i przedstawiają własne opinie o przedstawionych referatach. Następnie na podstawie tych dyskusji muszą przygotować recenzje prezentowanych prac.
