Brief description

The course aims at investigating basic conceptualisations of the media system category as well as contextual factors (society, culture, politics, economy, technology, religion) which have an impact on contemporary media firms. Review of existing theories and approaches will be used to create the catalogue of comparative media systems indicators, such as the level of press freedom, the development of the press and broadcasting, political parallelism and journalistic professionalisation (and journalism culture). In addition to this, the course will provide critical analysis of existing conceptualisations and will further call for a review of media systems theories in the digital age.

Brief description

The course aims to present an overview of recent developments in crisis communication theory and professional practice in the field. Such a combination of academic and industry perspectives exposes participants to various topics that could raise the interest of aspiring communication consultants, would-be public relations academics, and other students.

Academic research on crisis communication is rarely applied by practitioners of public relations and communication management. On the other hand, books on crisis management by public relations consultants primarily focus on practical hints on how companies, institutions, and individuals should communicate with specific groups during crises. Such how-to crisis manuals usually limit their horizons to personal achievements and whereabouts of their authors and other practitioners during crises, without putting them in a broader context.

Brief description

The purpose of the course is to present an overview of recent developments in public relations scholarship and the professional practice of the discipline. Such a combination of academic and industry perspectives is meant to expose participants to various topics that could raise the interest of aspiring communication consultants, would-be public relations academics, and other students.

This course will provide a comprehensive understanding of public relations' role in contemporary organizations, companies, institutions, activist groups, and society, as perceived by leading theorists and implemented by practitioners of the field. These two perspectives in communication: academic (primarily normative) and professional (focused on meeting business and organizational goals), differ significantly and usually do not converge, despite vocal declarations of both parties.
