ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): (not available) Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

Students are expected to have basic knowledge of cell biology (especially about structure and function of animal cells, mitotic and meiotic cell divisions) and the diversity of animal kingdom. Recommended but not obligatory is a prior course of Cell biology (1400-112BK or 1400-112BK-M).

Mode:

Classroom

Short description:

These practicals consist in comparative survay of developmental modes in several taxonomic groups of animals: roundworms, insects, echinoderms, fishes, amphibians, birds and mammals. Practicals are aimed at presentation of various patterns of cleavage, gastrulation, organogenesis, embryo protection (egg envelopes, fetal membranes), origin of germ cells.

Full description:

Gametogenesis, fertilization and developmental stages (cleavage, gastrulation and organogenesis) are presented in model organisms: Caenorhabditis elegans (roundworms), Drosophila melanogaster (insects), sea urchin (echinoderms), Danio rerio (fishes), Rana pipiens (amphibians), Gallus domesticus (birds), Mus musculus (mammals).

Learning outcomes:

Students are acquainted with gametogenesis and embryogenesis of representative members of animal classes (roundworms, insects, echinoderms, fishes, amphibians, birds and mammals). They recognize, define and describe stages of animal development (fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation, organogenesis), are able to tell homologous embryonic structures in various animals.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Students analyse permanent preparations or preparations made on their own, then make free-hand drawings and describe them. Their protocols are scored. A total score above the set threshold and satisfactory attendance record at the course are required to be admitted to the examination. Acceptable are only two absences. Examination is in the form of a written test.
