Short description: |
The seminar will cover the basic methods used in the natural sciences. The main theme are problems of mathematical physics and other disciplines which may be formulated in the language of partial differential equations and continuous dynamical systems. |
Full description: |
We will cover methods used to study partial differential equations. They include: -- variational methods applicable to elliptic equations, -- monotonicity methods applicable to parabolic equations, -- Galerkin method applied to Navier - Stokes equation, -- the method of characteristics applied to hyperbolic equation, -- the semigroup method applied to infinite dimensional dynamical systems. |
Bibliography: |
A large part of these topics can be fond in the book by L.C.Evans, the Partal differential equations |
Learning outcomes: |
(in Polish) Wiedza i umiejętności: 1. Zna podstawowe zastosowania równań różniczkowych cząstkowych: eliptycznych, parabolicznych i hiperbolicznych, w modelowaniu zjawisk przyrodniczych. 2. Wie co to jest zagadnienie dobrze postawione dla wspomnianych równań. Zdaje sobie sprawę z konieczności uczynienia pewnych uproszczeń w procesie modelowania. 3. Zna podstawowe metody rozwiązywania wspomnianych równań, rozumie trudności występujące przy dowodzeniu twierdzeń o istnieniu rozwiązań postawionych zagadnień. 4. Umie, na podstawie zadanej lektury monograficznej, samodzielnie przygotować i wygłosić referaty o różnej długości i o różnym stopniu trudności. Kompetencje społeczne: 1. Potrafi rozmawiać z przedstawicielami innych nauk o budowaniu poprawnych modeli fizycznych, czy biologicznych. 2. Umie wygłosić zrozumiały referat matematyczny dla przedstawicieli innych nauk i referat o podstawach modelowania fizycznego dla matematyków. 3. Jest przygotowany do współpracy z przedstawicielami innych nauk przyrodniczych. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
