Main fields of studies for MISMaP:

mathematics

Type of course:

elective seminars

Prerequisites (description):

We expect students to know what is a circle, a three dimensional sphere and an embedding.

Mode:

Classroom

Short description:

Knot theory is a rapidly developing branch of mathematics with many applications in 3- and 4- dimensional topology, singularity theory and symplectic geometry.

Bibliography:

Rolfsen "Knot theory"

Learning outcomes:

We expect that the students will deepen and broaden their knowledge of knot theory. This should result in an increased ability of students to conduct independent research on knot theory.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Attending the seminar and giving at least one talk is a requirement.
