ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

Cell Biology is the branch of biology that deals with the examination of cells, which are basic functional units of living organisms, able to independently carry out all life processes. Unlike whole cells, none of the individual components is not able to live independently. Knowledge of the structure and functioning of cells is fundamental in the biological sciences. In particular, this area includes issues related to the construction of a cell, its function, physiology, life cycle, divisions, and death. Subject matter is designed for students of the Faculty of Physics.

Full description:

The lecture is to introduce students to the overall knowledge of the biology of the cell.

The program includes topics on:

1. Fundamental concepts in cell biology

2. Molecular composition of cells

3. Diversity and structure (similarities and differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes)

4. Construction and functions of intracellular structures

5. Basic intracellular processes

6. Maintaining of a stable composition of the internal environment, uptake and removal of substances

7. Division and cell growth (cell cycle)

8. Aging and cell death

9. The impact of exogenous factors on cell homeostasis and carcinogenesis

10 Embryonic and Stem Cells
