Prerequisites (description):

The required courses completed:

1. Physics II (Electricity and Magnetism)

2. Physics Laboratory I

Short description:

The Laboratory concerns the methods of registration and analysis of biolelectric signals measured form the human body. The course is suitable for 2nd grade Neuroinformatics students and all students interested in the measurement and application of biolelectric signals.

Full description:

The aim of the Laboratory is to familiarize the student with the methods of registration of biolelectric signals form the human body. Measuring apparatus, parameters and experimental techniques are introduced. Sources of error and methods of their elimination are also presented. The specific topics concerned are as follows:

1. The general features of biolelectric signals. Measuring apparatus for biolelectric signals, including:

a) the electrodes and chemical interactions at the skin - electrode junction

b) elementary electronics of EEG amplifiers

c) the sources of measurement error

d) safety issues.

2. Registration and analysis of ECG signals.

3. Registration and analysis of EMG signals.

4. Registration and analysis of electrooculogram (EOG) signals.

5. Registration and analysis of Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) signals.

6. Recording of brain electrical activity (EEG).

Learning outcomes:

After completion of the course the student:

KNOWLEDGE

1. Is familiar with registration metods of basic biolelectric signals, such as: EEG, ECG, EMG, EOG, GSR.

2. Is familiar with EEG measuring apparatus' construction and parameters.

3. Is familiar with the sources of measurement error.

SKILLS

1. Is able to measure basic biolelectric signals, such as: EEG, ECG, EMG, EOG, GSR.

BASICS

1. Is aware of electrical phenomena playing a role in medical diagnostics.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Experiments performed by the students are graded. The final grade is an arithmetic mean of the grades obtained throughtout the course.
