Prerequisites (description): | A completed first year of study in a speciality or major in ophthalmic optics, including in particular geometrical, instrumental and physiological optics, cell biology, histology, basics of human anatomy and physiology. |

Short description: |
A lecture for 2nd year ESOO students. The class will discuss the basics of anatomy and neurophysiology of the organ of vision, with particular emphasis on the basics of the visual process. |

1. Anatomy and physiology of the organ of vision – basics 2. Embryology and development of the organ of vision 3. Orbit, basics of anatomy and physiology of the orbital region of the face 4. Eyebrows, eyelids and lacrimal system 5. Extraocular muscles and the eyeball, eye movements, neurophysiological control of eye movements 6. Conjunctiva, suprachoroid and sclera 7. Ocular surface and tear film – tear film production, composition, characteristics, structure of individual layers: lipid, aqueous and mucin layers 8. Cornea 9. Anterior and posterior chamber of the eye, iris, ciliary body, hydrodynamics of the aqueous fluid, pupil 10. Lens 11. Posterior segment of the eyeball, vitreous body, choroid, retina (development and structure of the retina, retinal pigment epithelium, basics of retinal biochemistry and neuroelectrophysiology) 12. Visual pathway, basics of optics and refraction physiology, accommodation and presbyopia 13. Optic nerve, visual perception (visual field, visual acuity, neurophysiological basis of binocular vision, colour vision, visual adaptation) 14. Central nervous system - visual cortex 15. Circulatory and lymphatic systems of the organ of vision |
