ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The objective of the Laboratory is to familiarize students with the devices used in the radio-protection measurements and with the applications of these devices. The Laboratory complements theoretical courses and exercises "Radio-protection 1" and "Radio-protection 2".

Full description:

Practical measurements will take 20 hours and 10 hours will be devoted to the analysis of the acquired data and to writing a report.

Students will use several different radiometers, including:

1) EKO-C Geiger-Mueller dosimeter

2) Canberra Colibri radiometer with Geiger-Mueller, scintillator and semiconductor probes

3) Canberra Inspector 1000 Hand-Held Multichannel Analyzer with the NaI scintillator probe

4) UNIDOS webline Universal Dosimeter

Students will perform the following tasks:

1) Search for gamma-ray radiation sources

2) Measurements of the radiation doses

3) Determination of iso-dose lines

4) Check of angular and energy characteristics Geiger-Mueller and scintillator probes

5) Measurements of the absorption of gamma and beta in materials

6) Determination of the maximum alpha-particle range in air

Learning outcomes:

Skills:

- students will be familiar with the devices commonly used in the radio-protection measurements and monitoring

- students will be able to identify type of the radiation, and to measure radiation doses, selecting suitable device depending on the environment, and intensity of the radiation .
