Short description: |
This mini-course will be centered on the persona of Professor Francois Englert, who was instrumental for the formulation of the theory of electroweak symmetry breaking, a foundation of the Standard Model of particle physics. The course will give a historical narrative of the formulation of the theory viewed from a personal perspective of one of its creators. |

Full description: |
The course will consist of a movie screening followed by a Q&A session. Learning outcomes: - the student knows and understands the phenomenon of electroweak symmetry breaking in a historical perspective - the student is able to communicate advanced physics concepts in a public discussion - the student is ready for lifelong learning On-site presence during the course is mandatory. There will be a delayed written exam consisting of three test questions and one open question based on the content of the movie and on Professor Englert’s Nobel lecture - the answer to the open question is mandatory, - the grade will be assigned as: grade = n+2, where n is the number of correctly answered test questions. The grade will go up by one if a students asks a meaningful question during the Q&A session. |
