Short description:

Basics of general and inorganic chemistry, properties of atoms, molecules, solid state and chemical bonds, properties and reactions of chemical elements and main groups of inorganic compounds.

Full description:

1. Structure and properties of atoms, atomic orbitals, electronic configuration, periodic table of elements, main physical and chemical properties of elements.

2. Properties and description of chemical bonds (covalent, ionic and metallic), theory of valence bonds and of molecular orbitals, structure of simple molecules, kinds of intermolecular (van der Waals) interactions, properties of hydrogen bond.

3. Structure of solid inorganic substances, including metals and semiconductors, elements of band theory of solid state.

4. General kinds of chemical reactions: acid / base, precipitation/dissolution, complexation, redox. Brønsted theory of acids and bases, strong / weak acids and bases, buffers, pH indicators, factors affecting solubility of inorganic compounds, properties and stability of complexes, elements of electrochemistry. Environmental role of different reaction kinds.

5. General characteristics of some important inorganic compounds: oxides, hydroxides, acids, exemplary salts and explaining their properties by position of corresponding elements in the periodic table. Methods of synthesis of inorganic compounds. Basic information about inorganic nanoparticles synthesis.

Learning outcomes:

After this course, the student:

-considers relations between physical and chemical properties of elements and chemical compounds, chemical composition and structure of the compound, position of the element in the periodic table and electronic structure of atoms and molecules; considers ionic equilibria and reactions in aqueous solutions of electrolytes as well as relations between solution composition and properties of solutions (e.g. salt solubility, concentration of various ions, solution pH);

- explains the origin of physical and chemical properties as well as structure of elements and compounds, chemical fundamentals of important processes observed in common life;

- anticipates properties of chemical compounds, basing on their composition,

- uses the knowledge in other courses related to chemistry.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Written examination, concerning the whole course contents (lecture and laboratory).

60 - 69 points: 3.5

70 - 79 points: 4

80 - 89 points: 4.5
