ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.
Language: English
Type of course:

elective courses

Prerequisites (description):

The classes are aimed at combining substantive competencies obtained by completing appropriate courses in Polish and language competencies leading to passing the European EChem-Test competence test in English in the selected field of chemistry. Thus, students in the last years of first-cycle studies can test their language skills in the field of chemistry and for self-education, including improving language competencies.

Mode:

Blended learning

Short description:

The aim of the course is to combine the substantive competences obtained by students during courses on the main subfields of chemistry with language competences related to chemical terminology in English. This will allow passing at least one of the selected modules of the European competence test EChemTest. During the classes, students will be familiarized with the scope of mandatory material in order to pass the tests in the basic fields of chemistry at the undergraduate level, as well as with the technical aspects of taking the above-mentioned tests.

Full description:

During the classes, students will learn about the specifics of the European competence test EChemTest, which is an electronic test aimed at checking knowledge and skills in the field of chemistry at various levels of difficulty: secondary school, first and second degree studies. This test is developed and coordinated by the European Chemistry Thematic Network Association (ECTNA) and is used both in Europe and beyond. The substantive scope of tests in the basic fields of chemistry will be discussed, of which at least one should be passed as part of the course completion. At the first cycle level, students can choose tests from the basic fields of chemistry at level 3:

Analytical Chemistry 3

Inorganic Chemistry 3

organic chemistry 3

physical chemistry 3

Biological Chemistry 3

This course is mainly based on student self-study. The test will be conducted in the computer room in the faculty buildings. Other meetings will be held online. The classes are supposed to give students access to the platform that organizes the test and to test their skills in the field of self-education.

Bibliography:

Recommended literature for subjects corresponds to literature for Chemistry courses (in Polish) and English language courses. Materials in English on the IUPAC website on chemical nomenclature and terminology.

Learning outcomes:

The student has advanced knowledge of selected phenomena in one selected field of chemistry. In addition, he/she independently expanded his/her information resources with missing elements in the scope of the relevant EChemTest tests, both in terms of content and language.

After passing the exam, the student is able to:

- self-gain knowledge through the selection of appropriate sources,

and then evaluate the obtained information to develop his/her skills, including in a foreign language

- use English to the extent necessary to read the basic professional literature in the field of chemistry and related sciences. He/She knows English at an intermediate level (B2)

- independently plan and implement his/her own learning.

The student is able to critically approach the obtained result verifying his/her substantive and linguistic knowledge within one selected field of chemistry, available from the pool.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Grade based on the result obtained after passing the EChemTest in one selected field of chemistry:

Analytical Chemistry 3

Inorganic Chemistry 3

organic chemistry 3

physical chemistry 3

Biological Chemistry 3

The exam lasts 60 minutes. The number of questions may vary depending on the selected field and the test itself. To receive a positive grade, student must receive at least 30% positive answers on the test. The percentage of the test directly corresponds to the grade:

30% -44% - 3

45% -59% - 3.5

60%-74% - 4

75%-89% - 4.5

90%-99% - 5

100% - 5!
