ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 1.50 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

Getting acquainted with the basic concepts of biological processes

Full description:

The structure of peptides and proteins; relation between the three-dimensional structure and biological activities. Selected proteins and their activity: oxygen transporters, enzymes. Major metabolic pathways. Generation and storage of metabolic energy. Nucleic acids and their genetic role. Principles of genetic technology.

Learning outcomes:

Understands the role and place of chemistry in the structure of science and its contribution to the development of our civilization.

Knows and understands the theory of chemical kinetics within the range of physical chemistry including the phenomena of catalysis.

Knows classes of organic compounds corresponding to types of functional groups (nomenclature, structure, chemical reactions, methods of preparation, distribution and use).

Knows the basics of biochemistry and understands the importance of chemical processes in animate nature.

Has an organized knowledge of the principles and ethical standards of research and teaching.

Knows the wideness of possessed knowledge and understands the need to improve professional and personal competence.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

At the end of the lecture there will be a written exam. Passing requires 60% of the points. The allowed number of absences from lectures - 2.
