Prerequisites (description): | The student should know the basics of molecular spectroscopy - in particular the processes of absorption of the electromagnetic radiation and the basics of optics. |
Mode: | Remote learning |
Short description: |
The lecture is addressed to students who want to expand their knowledge of infrared spectroscopy with issues that go beyond course lectures on spectroscopy - in particular on the use of infrared spectroscopy in the analysis of new materials, biological and forensic sciences and students are interested in the development prospects of infrared spectroscopy. |
Full description: |
During the lecture, various experimental techniques are discussed that enable investigations of standard and non-standard samples. The includes techniques like: PMIRRAS - polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy, ATR - attenuated total internal reflection, infrared microscopy and imaging, 2D-IR two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy and transmission measurements for samples in different states of focus with middle, far and near infrared regions. Further, selected methods of mixture analysis and chemometric methods are also discussed - principal component analysis. Each experimental technique is discussed along with the basic theoretical background necessary for the proper planning of the experiment and the interpretation of the results. Example applications for presented techniques are shown. The lecture covers intermolecular interactions that affect the spectra (hydrogen bonds, interaction of the adsorbate with the surface), studies of the arrangement of molecules in layers and crystals. Exemplary spectra of carbon materials, polymers and tissues are discussed. The examples come from the scientific literature of the last few years. |
Bibliography: |
References are given at the end of the every lecture. |
Learning outcomes: |
The student knows and understands the basics of various experimental techniques used in infrared spectroscopy, can choose the experimental method to the research problem, is aware of research trends in which infrared spectroscopy is used. Code: P8S_WG |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
The note is based on the wrtitten evaluation work. The subject is chosen together with the lecturer. |
