ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

Basic introduction for people interested in ocean science and/or polar regions and concerned about maritime environment protection.

Mode:

Blended learning

Short description:

Interdisciplinary lecture addressed to the participants with different background: chemistry, physics, biology, human science, etc. Provides an introduction to the ocean chemistry and knowledge about Earth's frigid zones.

Full description:

The aim of this lecture is to present in the systematic way the knowledge about sea chemistry, current environmental issues related to the microplastic debris and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) together with specificity of polar regions (as unique area of scientific research). It consists of eight meetings, each dedicated to one subject: from general introduction, Baltic characterization, microplactic problem up to the Earth's frigid zones description and sheering of experience.

Bibliography:

Up-to-data literature will be given at the first meeting.

Learning outcomes:

-to enlarge ones knowledge about ocean science, in particular chemistry of maritime environment

-to explain crucial concepts of maritime habitats protection and present main threats and (microplastic debris, persistent organic pollutants) and scientific activity in that domain

-to present the characteristic and specificity of polar regions

-to motivate to be up-to-data with literature and engaged in sea protection

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The written exam and selected article’s elaboration (presentation). All details to be given and clarified at the first lecture.

Practical placement:

none
