ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): (not available) Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Type of course:

obligatory courses

Prerequisites (description):

Basics of folds and faults origin, basics of genesis and description of sedimentary rocks.

Short description:

Lecture presents methods of usage of borehole data to reconstruct geometry of structures and physical properties of rocks deep below the Earth surface.

Full description:

Subject presents possibilities of extension of superficial geological data by adding third dimension for subsurface geological mapping purposes. This subsurface data are acquired mainly from boreholes, mostly from borehole cores. The most popular method is partial coring, and full geological profile is made by using well logging (measurements along the drill hole), and superficial geophysics (seismic, gravimetric, magnetic, magnetotelluric, geoelectric etc.). Seismics is the database for construction of the subsurface geological maps. Presently 3D seismic becomes increasingly popular, enabling constructing subsurface geological spatial models directly from digital seismic data. Methods of numerical presentation of subsurface geology and 3D visualisation of geological structures are discussed.
