ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.
Language: Polish
Type of course:

obligatory courses

Prerequisites (description):

(in Polish) Studenci powinni mieć pełną wiedzę z zakresu geologii dynamicznej i praktyczną umiejętność rozpoznawania skał.

Short description:

Tectonics is a field of science respecting deformation resulting from the strain of rocks in response to stress. Knowledge acquired in the course allows students to describe, identify, and classify of strain and reconstruct of stress. This is a form of preparing to course of geological mapping and individual fieldwork.

Full description:

The first part of lecture will focus on fundamentals of rocks mechanics and mechanism of failure. Students become aware that all deformations of rocks are response to stress in three-dimensional space. They study mechanism of failure and learn that reconstruction of the stress field is possible on the base of geometric analysis of deformation. Next part of lecture will be devoted to systematic of tectonic deformations (faults, fractures and folds) and description methods. Tectonic studies are important for understanding mechanism of deformation and forces responded for origin of tectonic structures. Students will become familiar with character and behavior of deformations which are connected with depth of tectonic processes. This knowledge allows predicting how deep and extend is fault, what is character of folds, etc. After these lecture students known relationship between stresses and ways of their relaxation, i.e. during earthquake. Next lecture are devoted to special type of tectonics: germane and alpine tectonics, glacitectonics, halotectonics, petrotectonics and neotectonics.

Learning outcomes:

Students have some knowledge of the mechanism of failure and on different style of tectonic deformations. Students have ability to classify and analyze of tectonic structures. They could qualify deformation processes and reconstruct of stress field connected with them. After course, students known how to make and how to use stereoplot in structural analysis. Lecture is a background to “Course of Geological Mapping” and individual work in the field.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Exam - has a form of multiple choice test and graphic questions.

Correction exam - has a form of multiple choice test and graphic questions.
