Requirements:

Geomorphology & Quaternary geology (Part 1) 1300-OEMQ1L1
Geomorphology & Quaternary geology (part 2) 1300-OEMQ2Z1

Prerequisites (description):

Before starting the course student is required to:

-have a knowledge about interpretation of the Quaternary deposits and the sedimentological environments

-know the stratigraphy of the Quaternary in Poland and the extent of particular glacial cycles during the Pleistocene.

-recognize major gemorphological forms on the map

-be able to explain the origin and genesis of the glacial, fluvioglacial, fluvial, aeolian forms.

- know the geographical subdivision of Poland.

Short description:

Characteristic of the geomorphology and quaternary geology in central and eastern Poland based on presentation of the geological, geomorphological and anthropogenic sites. Description and presentation of the quaternary deposits in the field and their relation to the geomorphology.

Full description:

Presentation of the theoretical issues in the field.

Training in interpretation of geomorphology (e.g. morainic uplands, valley terraces etc.) known from the analysis of the hypsometric maps.

Presentation and analysis of the major types of Quaternary deposits in the field (site description, lithological analysis, sedimentological description etc.).

Training in interpretation of the specified relief and its relation to the specified type of deposits.

Presentation of the methodology used during the fieldwork. Interpretation of the different geological facts and creation of logic conclusions.

Presentation of the geomorphology and Quaternary geology of central and eastern Poland.

Sites are located in the Warsaw Dell, Suwałki and Mazury Lakeland, Northern Masovia and Podlasie.

Learning outcomes:

After the course student is able to:

- connect theoretical knowledge with information collected in the field

- analyse hypsometric maps and to compare them with real topography

- describe, recognize and infer the origin of the Quaternary deposits

- infer the relation between deposits and forms

- realize major measurements in the field

- realize and interpret results of the shallow drillings by hand-probe

- realize and interpret simple cross section made on the basis of information collected in the field

- describe the outline of the geology and geomorphology of central and eastern Poland

- interpret the significant differences between Quaternary deposits in relation to their age and location

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Final written exam. As part of retake - written test. Attendance check – no absences allowed.

Practical placement:

none
