Short description:

Lecture presents basics of geological mapping, mainly methodology of geological survey. Methods of positioning and documentation of geological outcrops are presented, especially connected with superficial mapping. Basics of subsurface mapping and geological interpretation of aerial and satellite imagery are presented too.

Full description:

The aim of lecture is to acquaint students with basics of geological mapping, especially with methodology of detailed geological survey. It presents different methods of positioning and documentation of geological phenomena, and presentation results of geological survey as geological maps and cross-sections. Methods of classical, superficial mapping are presented in detail, whilst subsurface mapping is presented in brief. Basics of geological interpretation of aerial and satellite imagery, RADAR images, and DEMs are presented too.

Exercises are dedicated to fluent reading of geological maps, and drawing of geological cross sections, from simple structures to most complex nappe-thrust structures. Exercises need some carefulness and graphical accuracy, so often are finished as homework.

Exercises are passed as average grade from student’s works and result of final test from lecture.

Learning outcomes:

After course (lecture) student have theoretical knowledge sufficient to project and produce detail geological survey, and superficial geological map with sections and report. Have basic knowledge about geological Remote Sensing and subsurface mapping. Student can analyze different kinds of geological maps, recognize all types of geological structures, and explain geological history of mapped area.
