Course title: Methodology of stratigraphy
Name in Polish: Metodologia stratygrafii
Organizational unit: Faculty of Geology
Course groups: (in Polish) Przedmiot obowiązkowy na II sem. I r. stud. II st. GES na spec. tektonika i kartografia geologiczna
ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.
Language: Polish
Type of course:

obligatory courses

Prerequisites (description):

The student knows the basic rules in stratigraphy, gained from the methodological part of Historical Geology classes and has the basic information on the geological structure of Poland. Knows and freely uses the global stratigraphic chart. Has the basic information on the geology of the Holy Cross Mountains. General knowledge on the processes that form the Earth’s surface and on the origin and environments of sedimentary rocks are indispensable.

Auxiliary lectures: Sedimentology

Short description:

The lectures are devoted to the currently applied stratigraphic methods, their origin and links with historical concepts of Earth’s evolution.

Full description:

The lecture presents currently used stratigraphic methods (their theoretical background and applications) as well as their origin and links with historical concepts of Earth’s evolution (uniformitarianism, catastrophism, plutonism, neptunism, etc.). Methods presented in the lectures include: lithostratigraphy, eustatostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy, chemostratigraphy, allostratigraphy, and biostratigraphy.

Learning outcomes:

(P2A_W01) Following completion of the course, the student is capable of explaining the basic differences between the concepts of neptunism, plutonism, uniformitarianism, catastrophism etc.

(P2A_W02) (P2A_U06) Is able to select a correct method to solve stratigraphic exercises and has the general information on the methods used to correlate geological logs. Knows how to construct and interpret cladograms, Shaw diagrams and Fischer projections. Knows how to interpret results of geochemical analyses used in stratigraphy.

(P2A_W02) (P2A_U01) Knows the theoretical rules and application of the following stratigraphic methods: lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, chronostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, chemostratigraphy, seismic stratigraphy, cyclostratigraphy, eustatostratigraphy, event stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy.

(P2A_W06) Applies simple statistic methods in the correlation, recognition of cyclicity and classification of fossil assemblages.

(P2A_K02) Is capable of team work in the construction of a unified stratigraphic profile
