Short description:

Professional placement takes place in enterprises, institutions and other companies that are directly or indirectly linked with geology. The duration of the placement is a minimum of 192 h. The range of the placement includes the participation of students in projects and preparation of documentation, as well as participation in field work, and is determined in a separate contract.

Full description:

Depending on the current activities of the accepting institution, it is required that the student takes part in at least 2 activities from the following list:

1. laboratory analyses

2. use of internet resources of geological data, their verification, application of simple and advanced computer software in geological calculations, graphic or written interpretations of the obtained results

3. compilation and analysis of geological maps

4. analysis of spatial development plans

5. preparation of schedule of geological works

6. elaboration of hydrogeological documentation

7. elaboration of research documentation on the ore deposit basement

8. elaboration of geological-engineering documentation

9. preparation of sozological reports

10. preparation of reclamation projects

11. elaboration and interpretation of geological data

12. field research

At each stage of the placement, the students are supervised and coordinated by selected employees.

Learning outcomes:

During the placement, the student (at least one aspect should be pointed out in the contract):

- gains knowledge on office and field activities in commercial enterprises related to geology and environmental protection

- gains knowledge on software used in preparation of documentation reports

- attains teamwork skills.

Following completion of the placement, the student (fulfills at least 3 of the aspects stated below; the aspects should be mentioned in the certificate of professional placement):

- applies advanced techniques of laboratory research (petrographic, geochemical, hydrochemical, geotechnical, hydrogeological, geoengineering)

- makes use of internet resources of geological data, can verify them, uses simple and advanced computer software in geological calculations (e.g. Visual MODFLOW, AutoCAD, Arc GIS, etc.), prepares graphic or written interpretations of the obtained results

- can determine the origin of a mineral deposit, processes leading to its formation and the application of particular resources in science and industry; can determine groundwater quality, assess its usability in various applications; assesses groundwater pollution, interprets maps of groundwater chemistry and quality, assesses susceptibility of groundwater to pollution, and determines the rules of its monitoring and protection

- can analyze spatial development plans and with account to geological conditions select the growth of particular fields optimally for the evolution of the natural environment; identifies environmental hazards resulting from the investment process

- can prepare a geological interpretation of geophysical data, can restore and balance geological cross-sections; can identify lithology and tectonic structures on geophysical images and determine their geological and petrophysical parameters; can solve basic problems related to geological-geophysical well operation

- can briefly characterize geological, geological-deposit, geological-engineering and hydrogeological conditions in particular regions of Poland and selected parts of the world, can compare regions of Poland with regard to volume of mineral deposits and groundwater, can explain the origin of mineral deposits and water in Poland with regard to the geological history of a given area and its geological structure

- can distinguish uniform geological-engineering horizons, has knowledge on the elaboration and analysis of geological-engineering atlases, can identify geohazards in the geological-engineering environment, knows rules of geological, deposit and geological-engineering documentation

- can autonomously interpret research results and can perform critical analysis of the differences; can efficiently use various Polish and foreign references and critically analyze their contents; can refer research results and state of knowledge referring to the research based on existing Polish and foreign references using multimedia techniques; can write a research report in Polish

- knows and applies Geological and Mining Law, Water Law and other legal provisions related to geological activities; has the ability to plan the activities to calculate the volume of mineral resources and groundwater, knows the fundamentals of water management and its economical aspects

- plans empirical field research (type, schedule, field verification of the results) and search query of field archives to acquire necessary material for the achievement of a scientific or practical goal, selects research sites, collects samples (water, soil, rock) or specimens according to relevant techniques

- understands the necessity of continuous raising of professional competence and search for new technologies to solve research problems by study of professional references and legal provisions

- cooperates in thematic teams during field work and team lab activities

- can appropriately determine the schedule of activities and priorities used to accomplish a research project

- by conducting geological research activities knows how to identify problems and propose individuals ways of their solving

- can present and explain the social and environmental aspects of practical application of accomplished knowledge and skills, also with regard to existing risk and possible environmental hazards

- successively communicates with specialists and the society in speaking, writing and by multimedia presentation of research results

- shows responsibility for the safety of himself and others during laboratory activities, field courses and professional placement

- knows the fundamentals of entrepreneurship in application to the undertaken research or practical activity (e.g. determination of the type and range of research for volume calculations, selection of appropriate method of groundwater volume calculation, selection of appropriate techniques such as type of calculation software); can plan and execute the activities for a team.
