 Kurs z geologii stosowanej, hydrogeologii i ochrony środowiska.

Short description:

Seminar acquaints students with the problems of conducting research, the implementation of MSc thesis in engineering geology specialty, and assists in the preparation and execution of the subsequent stages of thesis implementation.

Elaboration in the form of the multimedia presentation (1-2 per semester) is directly related to the thesis. The student, upon returning from the reconnaissance in the area of her/his thesis, in the winter semester presents the report of the observations made in the field, makes the confrontation of the existing geological data (eg maps) with the facts.

Full description:

Seminar aims to acquaint students with the task of the problems commonly found during implementation of the MSc thesis in engineering geology specialization. In the winter semester, students has already chosen the theme of their thesis and they are after a brief reconnaissance of the thesis area. The first presentation shows their observations and comments on the conformity of existing materials with reality. The main tasks of the work - on which the student attention will focus – are agreed. The presentation covers the essential information on the geology and hydrogeology of the studied area. In the summer semester student evaluate the engineering-geological conditions of studied area and select the methods to solve the problem posed in the thesis. This applies to, in particular, the scope of field research and the way of mapping and soil sampling methods.

The following stages of the thesis implementation are discussed:

- methodological basis of research work,

- methodological basics of implementation of the thesis,

- results of preliminary field studies,

- preliminary table of contents – plan of MSc thesis,

- archival research - a review of the literature of the study area,

- field research – designing the methods of field research, the amount and type of samples needed to perform the planned laboratory tests,

- laboratory tests – determination the scope and their methodology.
