  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

Prerequisites (description):

Basic knowledge in physical geology and sedimentology, petrography of sedimentary rocks and geophysics. It is needed also passive knowledge of English at B2 level.

Short description:

It is realized in tutorial form - individual course based on discussion between student and tutor. It’s focused on the using of the geophysical methods (mainly radiometric) in the sedimentological interpretations and petrographical analyzes. The scientific papers and internet data/reports on the sedimentology, petrography and geophysics aspects will be analyzed during the meetings. Some part of the meetings will be dedicated on the application of the geophysical methods in the interpretation of sedimentary environments of selected sedimentary successions.

Full description:

The aim of the tutorial is to introduce of the student to the issues of the interdisciplinary approach to the geological research of sedimentary successions, awakening the student’s scientific interests and passion, critical analysis of scientific texts, and planning of their individual projects. The study of selected sedimentary successions allows to increase the student’s knowledge of sedimentology, petrography and geophysics. The individual form of the course has the key-role here – free discussion of scientific articles and practical aspects of geophysical research, the possibility of asking questions, formulation of scientific hypothesis, and also searching for solution to problems allow the students to build the confidence of own skills and geological awareness. During the first two or three meetings it will be discussed the scientific papers about geophysical methods and sedimentology or petrography research. Also there are prepared minimum 2 academic essay based on the scientific literature. On the following meetings student collect the lithological observations of the rocks in the core storage or in the field and together with tutor select the archival geophysical data or they perform the geophysical measurements on the rocks. Finally, student interpret of the geophysical data and prepare the presentation or popular science article.

Based on the student’s interest, on the first meeting the student chooses one of the tutorial topics presented below:

- the application of natural gamma rays of rocks in the interpretation of sedimentary environments of the selected succession of rocks;

- the application of spectrometric analysis of natural gamma rays of rocks in the interpretation of sedimentary environments of the selected succession of rocks;

- the application of spectrometric analysis of natural gamma rays of rocks in the petrography interpretation of sedimentary rocks;

- the application of spectrometric analysis of natural gamma rays of rocks in the sedimentological-paleopedological research;

- the application of radiometric measurements in the sedimentary basin analysis.

There is also possible to develop the issue proposed by students in the scope of the sedimentology and geophysics.

Ponadto student korzysta z najnowszych sedymentologicznych, petrograficznych i geofizycznych artykułów naukowych, np. z czasopism takich jak Sedimentary Geology, Marine and Petroleum Geology, Journal of Sedimentary Research, Earth Science Reviews, Episodes, Journal of Applied Geophysics, Catena. Student korzysta także z danych zamieszczanych na stronach internetowych międzynarodowych organizacji geologicznych tj. SEPM, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Society of Exploration Geophysicists, International Union of Geological Sciences.

Learning outcomes:

During the course, student accomplishes at least 3 effects from the list below:

- understands and explains sedimentological processes and phenomena in relation to the analyzed rocks;

- understands and explains the geophysical term and definitions;

- understands the need to application of geophysical method in the sedimentology and petrography research;

- knows how the geophysical methods should be used in the sedimentological and petrographical research of sedimentary rocks;

- has skills in the identification of problems in relation of the analyzed sedimentary succession and proposes their solutions;

- cares about the reliability and credibility of his work;

- can writes and adequately illustrate a scientific essay based on literature and internet sources which is discussed with the tutor;

- can describes the selected topic using the multimedia presentation;

- knows an English language at a B2 level and has sufficient language skills to use English-language scientific literature;

- uses advanced information techniques;

- understands the need of life-long learning.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Obtaining a course credit requires participation in all tutorials, each time documented by the tutor in form of individual tutorial record sheets. Moreover, the course is credited based on the preparation of minimum one essay, multimedia presentation or popular scientific article, and assessment of the individual student’s work and commitment. The form of crediting is discussed on the first student-tutor meeting.
