The lecture aims to acquaint students with knowledge relating to diverse questions connected with mineralization occurring in living organisms, including the human body in particular. The lecturer discusses mineralogical problems with reference to some questions of geology, paleontology, geo- and biochemistry as well as to some questions of medicine e.g. osteology and urology in particular. Results of the mineralogical investigations on inorganic substances arising in living organisms, particularly on mineral compounds crystallizing in the human body, are discussed. The results of investigations on these substances from different parts of the human body (bones and cartilages, teeth and dental calculi, blood vessels, lungs, pancreas, and other organs) are presented and interpreted. The results of investigations on texture and phase compounds of calculi from the human urinary system are explain in detail. |

Learning outcomes: |
Student will be able to: KNOWLEDGE 1. determine mineral compounds of the fossilized and recent animal organisms. 2. estimate the role of these compounds in the fields of biochemistry and petrology. 3. discuss biochemistry of calcium and phosphorus within the human body. 4. describe physiological and pathological mineralization of the human body. ABILITIES 5. mention methods of the mineralogical investigations and their use for the phase and texture researches of calculi of the human urinary system. 6. distinguish different types of the urinary stones with regard to their mineral composition. 7. choose a proper research method to solve the questions connected with biominerals. SOCIAL COMPETENCE 8. perceive a relationship between biomineralogy, biogeochemistry, geology and paleontology. 9. appreciate the mineralogical investigations on mineralizations of the human body. 10. see the relationships between mineralogy of the human body, medicine and the natural environment. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
