Short description:

Ceramic workshops - theory and practice, are classes carried out in the form of a practical training, which aims to familiarize the student with the subject of designing artistic ceramics, including the methods of shaping and decorating it, in connection with the basic issues of the technology of ceramic raw materials. During the classes, it will be possible to implement original projects in the known techniques.

Full description:

The aim of the practice is to familiarize the student with the subject of designing artistic ceramics, including ceramic forming and decorating techniques, in connection with the basic issues of the technology of ceramic raw materials. During the classes, it will be possible to implement original projects in the known techniques.

The program of classes includes: 5 lectures (an asynchronous form):

- history and development of ceramics;

- overview of raw materials used in ceramics;

- types and classification of ceramics;

- types and composition and properties of ceramic masses;

- overview of the basic stages of the classical ceramics production process (raw material composition, mass homogenization, forming, drying as well as firing and finishing).

And 10 practical classes, which will include:

- preparation of raw materials used in ceramics;

- teaching of composing ceramic masses and preparation of slip as well as casting from the mass in plaster molds;

- traditional techniques of handbuilding, such as pinching, soft slab slab, and coil construction, including the use of gypsum molds;

- methods of decorating ceramics, including an introduction to various glazing techniques;

- the use of glaze as the selected method of decorating ceramics

- designing and making ceramic jewelery, taking into account the known methods of shaping and decorating ceramics

Learning outcomes:

After the end of the course, the student:

- has an organized knowledge of the functional properties of ceramic materials;

- has knowledge of the basic raw materials included in various masses and ceramic glazes and the principles of their selection;

- has knowledge of composition of ceramic masses;

- has knowledge of forming methods;

- has basic knowledge of design, which allows him to design shapes and decorations on ceramic products;

- has knowledge of the basic technology used in classical ceramics and ceramic devices used in ceramic factories

After the end of the course, the student:

- has a basic resource of skills in working with ceramic materials, knows the basics of technological processes, is able to operate the basic equipment and tools of the ceramics workshop

- can design the shape of a ceramic product, select the type and material of decorations made on it;

- has the ability to use the acquired knowledge in practice

- can use techniques and technology to create and implement projects in the field of artistic ceramics;

- has the ability to work in a team.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Classes have a workshop formula. The knowledge and skills acquired by the student during the classes are assessed during the classes, therefore the most important assessment criterion is the attendance at the classes and the implementation of their own project in the known techniques.
