ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): (not available) Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

Sedimentology is a scince focused on the origin of sedimentary rocks – thus on processes such as processes of transport, erosion and deposition in various sedimentary environments.

The practical course consists of 5 meetings (6 hours each) that take place in consecutive Saturdays in the spring period (April-May). The meetings are both stationary (3 meetings - practice and theory) and field (2 meetings in Vistula river valley in Warsaw and its proximity) classes.

Stationary classes comprise 3 elements: (1) presentation of theory; (2) experimental model in sedimentary lab; (3) practice work with rock samples and fossil material. During the course three different models are presented – straight river and sediment transport, meandering river, and shorezone.

Field classes are devoted to natural and anthropogenic processes in Vistula river valley, also to different biological and environmental issues,

The course consists of practical classes (5 meetings, 6 hours each) that take place in consecutive Saturdays in the spring period (April-May). The meetings are both stationary (3 meetings - practice and theory) and field (2 meetings in Vistula valley in Warsaw and its proximity) classes.

Meeting 1. Presentation: sedimentology as a science, sedimentary environments in geological record. Fluvial environment, river flow, sediment transport. Sedimentary lab: model of straight river, river flow, sediment transport, regression and transgression, change of sea level, global warming. Practice: rock samples, sedimentary structures, direction of transport.

Meeting 2. Presentation: Marine clastic sedimentation in shallow and deep environment (turbidity currents). Sedimentary lab: model of meandering river phases of transport, bedforms, erosional and depositional forms. Practice: rock samples, sedimentary structures, hieroglyphs and ichnofossils, direction of transport.

Meeting 3. Presentation: Shallow water carbonates and evaporates. Shorezone and its division (zonation), wave activity, erosional and depositional processes. Sedimentary lab: model of shorezone, erosional and depositional forms processes in wave activity conditions, changes of shoreline during regresion and transgression. Practice: rock samples (carbonates – limestones, dolomites, marls, evaporites – gypsum, salts).

Meeting 4. Field classes, Wyspy Zawadowskie, erosional and depositional processes in river channel, sedimentary structures, measurement, environmental isuues.

Meeting 5. Field classes, Ławice Kiełpińskie, erosional and depositional processes in river channel, sedimentary structures, measurement, environmental isuues (sewage treatment, bird protection).

Meeting 1 is first in a row, the succession of the remaining depends on the weather conditio (meetings 4 and 5 must be conducted in the field).

1. Knowledge of:

- causes of increased erosion and/or accumultion in river valleys

- causes of changes of shreline, changes of sea-level

- history and causes af geographic changes in Middle Vistula valley

- relations between sedimentary processes and creation sand bars inhabited by specyphic groups of wild birds

- natural processes causing changes of river profiles

- basic relations between sedimentary processes and forms in river channels

- the influence of natural and anthropogenic agents on river profile and evolution of marine and oceanic shorezones

2. Abilities:

- localization in field and on maps

- reading of topographic maps

3. Social competences:

- ability to work in group, division of work during firld and stationary classes

- responsibility for safety (both for self and other persons)

- responsibility for and cognisant protection of environment

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Presence at classes is crucial. One absence is allowed. Potential complex cases may be solved separately.

Activity during classes.

Short report on field classes. Raport should be substantively correct and contain valuable additional material (images, photos, diagrams, etc.).

The final grade is mean of grades for activity and field reports.

Practical placement:
