II. Productivity of terrestrial ecosystems programme includes: Productivity as a measure of intensity and rate of biomass production; measuring methods, limiting factors. The distribution of the world productivity - biomass productivity in different climatic vegetation zones. The natural forest regionalization: geographical diversity of the forest production conditions, natural forest regions. A review of plant communities depending on their production potential, forest habitat types. The state, resources, exploitation, threats and protection of forests in Poland. The agricultural environment; soil overdrying and eutrophication, area pollutants, the effects of simplified crop rotation, decrease in biodiversity. Productivity and biodiversity - protection and moderate utilization. Productivity and exploitation of forests, meadows, pastures and fields under cultivation. |

II. Detailed issues: - productivity as a measure of intensity and rate of biomass production; methods of measurement, limiting factors; - the productivity of biomes in the world, climatic vegetation zones from evergreen equatorial forests to deserts, gross and net production of vegetation formations; - the natural forest regionalization: spatial diversity of the forest production potential of habitats, characterization of natural forest regions; - a review of plant communities depending on soil quality classes, criteria for identification of forest habitat types; - the state of forests in Poland - timber production, health state, main threats, protection and evaluation of cutting age of tree stands depending on species, soil quality classes and cultivation treatments; - the productivity of forests, meadows, pastures and arable fields, methods of assessment and their bad and good points; - productivity and biodiversity; The Biodiversity Convention: protection and preservation of habitats and species; - productivity and exploitation of arable lands, development of agriculture and the problem of the human population feeding. During the field course students estimate: - the total production of timber, the average and current annual increase in the total stand volume depending on the tree stand age in the experimental forests of the Forest Research Institute in Sękocin; - the productivity of early spring geophytes depending on fertility and humidity of habitats in the Las Bielanski nature reserve; - floral diversity and forest community structure depending on the production potential of habitats in the Kampinoski National Park, the characteristic species of habitats depending on soil humidity and fertility |
