ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 6.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.
Language: Polish
Type of course:

optional courses

Prerequisites (description):

Students should possess knowledge of basic terms in the field of plant morphology, of the scientific nomenclature of species, and basic knowledge of the national (Polish) flora.

Mode:

Classroom

Short description:

The course covers issues of systematics, dispersal and use of species of trees shrubs and dwarf shrubs. Classes are held in laboratories, park and greenhouses of the Botanical Garden of the University of Warsaw. The purpose of training is to provide comprehensive knowledge about trees, bushes and shrubs, both systematical and ecological, as well as purely practical, and especially to learn to determine native woody species and the most common in our country alien species of trees and shrubs. Some of the topics of the course: an introduction to the morphology of woody plants, determination of trees and shrubs based on the shoots and buds, determination and systematics of native trees and shrubs of gymnosperms and angiosperms

Full description:

The course covers systematics, dispersal and use of trees, shrubs and dwarf shrubs of native species and the most common in our country alien species, especially those manifesting invasive tendencies. The course includes 90 hours of laboratory classes preceded by a brief introductory lecture. The introduction is designed to provide theoretical knowledge useful in plant determination. Lab classes are devoted to the practical determination of the trees, bushes and dwarf shrubs by students using a key, and the characteristics provided by the teacher. The purpose of training is to provide comprehensive knowledge of the selected species of trees, bushes and dwarf shrubs, both systematical and ecological, as well as purely practical, and especially to learn how to identify them in different phenological stages and phases of the life cycle. The classes will be held in the Botanical Garden (in laboratories as well as in the botanical park). Purpose of this course is to learn to identify trees and shrubs of major species of domestic and alien (including "difficult" genera) and among not-native, particularly species getting feral and invasive. Individual determination of species will be preceded by an introduction to the issues of nomenclature and descriptive morphology. Additional information contain information from the field of physiography, ethnobotany and history of material culture.

Learning outcomes:

KNOWLEDGE (K_W02) know factors that influence the condition of wildlife and environment, with emphasis on alien and invasive plants; (K_W05) know the causes of degradation of soil, water resources and landscape; (K_ W12) know the rules of planning of surveys and collecting dendrological data; (K_W12) know how to use woody plants in restitution and re-cultivation of ecosystems

SKILS (K_3) know how to use scientific literature; (K_U10) is capable of collecting and interpreting empirical data on woody plants; (K_16) is able to plane and carry out with help of teacher simple investigation and dendrological expertise; (K_U17) is able to recommend appropriate method of monitoring of woody plants

SOCIAL COMPETENCE (K_K02) necessity of continuous actualization and extend dendrological knowledge; (K_K06) can properly determine priority in resolving of problems of invasive woody plants; (K_K07) understand necessity to use the rule of sustainable development, and elimination of alien woody plants; (K_K10) can work in group

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Evaluation of knowledge on plant species covered by the course (identification of herbarium specimens and fresh shoots) and evaluation of theoretical knowledge about the characteristics of species of trees, bushes and dwarf shrubs covered by course.
