Short description:

30h, lecture

Full description:

The class is intended to be an interactive lecture, building on the art and science of strategic analysis and responding to the possible academic interests of its participants. It will offer an introduction to the theory and methods of strategic analysis. They essentially serve as management and planning tools in the activities of the state and private (business) entities. However, together we will consider their utility for security studies.

The most important component of the class will be the presentation of the strategic analysis environment (including the analyst's toolkit, relationship with the environment, sources of pressure, cognitive limitations, risks of distorting the results of the analysis and ways to mitigate them, analytical methods and effective delivery of the analytical product).

After the class, each participant should be able to assess the usefulness of strategic analysis techniques as research tools, and to understand:

- the strategic analysis as an art and science of multi-faceted utility,

- the significance of intellectual and ethical standards in the analyst's work,

- the importance of asking the right analytical questions, the spectrum of information sources and methods of verifying their reliability,

- the need to develop critical thinking skills, recognize and avoid cognitive bias,

- be familiar with key analytical methods and techniques, and to recognize their utility in solving practical analytical problems,

- know, how to effectively deliver the “analytical product”.
