ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Full description:

The aim of the course is to familiarize the students with scientific information re-sources and with the effective methods of exploring their contents and data pro-cessing. The closed (licensed) and open (Open Access) resources are taken into con-sideration. The course topics include:

­- Bibliographic information resources (computerized library catalogs OPAC, central and distributed catalogs, scientific metasearch engines (discovery and delivery systems).

­- General and special bibliographies (current and retrospective national bibliog-raphy, literary, law and economic bibliographies).

­- Citation databases. Tools for bibliometrics and scientometrics analyses.

­- Reference managers as a supporting tool in bibliographic data management.

­- Polish and foreign digital libraries, institutional and domain-specific repositories.

­- Scientific internet search engines.

­- Open research data repositories. Data journals. The use of OAI-PMH, API in data downloading.

­- Public information as a source of research data (patent, law, statistics information resources).

­- The software and machine learning techniques for identifying and processing of scientific resources.

­- Research data visualization. The principles and techniques of research data visu-alizations. Common erros. Charts, diagrams, word clouds, the elements of in-fographics. The contents will be discussed in the context of PhD student works, i.e: scientific publications, presentations, posters.

Skills: Can:

UW_1 - make use of knowledge from various fields of science, in particular the social sciences in order to creatively identify, formulate and innovatively solve complex prob-lems or perform tasks of a research nature, and in particular to: define the purpose and object of scientific research in the field of the social sciences, formulate a research hy-pothesis, develop research methods, techniques and tools and apply them creatively, make inferences based on scientific findings

Social competences: Is ready to:

KK_1 - critically evaluating achievements within a given scientific discipline in the field of the social sciences.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

description of requirements related to participation in classes, including the permitted number of explained absences:

Lessons in the computer room. Only one absence is allowed (the excuse is not re-quired). The other absences should be passed.

principles for passing the classes and the subject (including resit session):

The attendance in class, timely completion of partial assignments and the final project is required to pass the course.

methods for the verification of learning outcomes:

Practical exercises related to browsing the information sources under discussion and making a project.

evaluation criteria:

For each exercise and the final project the student will receive 6 points. The mini-mum of 71% points is required to pass the course. The details of the exercises and the final project will be presented during the first class.
