Full description:

The course leads to learning basic principles of cartographic visualization of spatial data containing quantitative and qualitative attributes. Basic rules related to a presentation of data, with regards to thematic maps and charts of different kinds are discussed with the help of a variety of figures. The figures shown during the classes will be examples of consequences of obeying and violating the rules, with emphasis put on effectiveness of map reading and map use.

Keywords: Graphical variables, color theory. Statistics, graphics, map: gains and losses of information due to different techniques of data presentation. Cartographic visualization. Effectiveness of graphical and cartographic presentation.

Lecture is evaluated on the basis of

(1) quizzes conducted during the lectures,

(2) active attendance,

(3) a seminar work (coursework): analysis and evaluation of selected forms of graphical presentation of data (maps and graphs and charts) from a selected scientific article chosen by students on their own.

Verification of knowledge disseminated through:

(1) quizzes,

(2) critical discussion on flaws and advantages of visualizations presented during classes,

(3) individually conducted evaluation of selected illustrations in scientific article (as a seminar/course work)

evaluation criteria:

The coursework accounts for 60% of the final grade; 20% is earned for quizzes and 20% is earned for active attendance .
