ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

2nd year student of the 1st degree studies (BA) in the field of geography, implementing a pedagogical block.

Presenting the practical aspects of the work of a geography teacher in primary school and shaping students' skills necessary in this profession.

Short description:

In the summer semester 2020/21, classes are conducted remotely using GoogleMeet and the Kampus platform.

The aim of the course is to create their own workshop by future teachers and to develop competences in the field of various aspects of planning didactic activities.

Full description:

Classes cover the following topics:

- analysis of the core curriculum (goals and content) and geography curricula in primary school, directional planning - development of material distribution;

- methodological planning of didactic activities, including: formulation of lesson objectives (general and specific), selection of teaching strategies and methods, forms of work and didactic aids for the specific content of geography teaching, taking into account the cognitive abilities of students in grades V-VIII of primary school;

- the use of selected methods of activating students, taking into account their diverse educational needs (e.g. project method);

- substantive, professional and reliable assessment of students' work performed in the classroom and at home, developing a test to assess the knowledge and skills of students in a specific range of material

- developing students' curiosity and cognitive independence; popularization of geographic knowledge in the school and out-of-school environment.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge: Student:

• characterizes the didactic assumptions of the subject geography in primary school in relation to the provisions of the core curriculum;

• discusses the work of a geography teacher in primary school;

• lists and characterizes teaching strategies and methods and assesses their effectiveness in implementing the content of geography teaching in primary school;

• discusses how to design tests, tests and other tools useful in the process of assessing students in teaching geography.

Skills. Student:

• develops and assesses the distribution of material on the basis of the analysis of the core curriculum in geography in primary school;

• formulates the objectives of the lesson (general and specific) and arranges them according to taxonomic levels and program requirements;

• designs a geography lesson using various forms, strategies and teaching methods adapted to the objectives and content of geographic education in primary school;

• uses a variety of teaching aids to explain natural and socio-cultural phenomena and processes;

• develops a test to assess the knowledge and skills of students in a specific range of material.

Social competence. The student is ready to:

• actively uses various forms and strategies and teaching, as well as modern teaching methods and means;

• popularizing geographic knowledge among students and developing students' curiosity, cognitive activity and independence as well as logical and critical thinking;

• building a system of values ​​and developing students' ethical attitudes, especially tolerance, openness and respect for diversity.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The final grade includes: a) evaluation of the student's activity during classes and b) evaluation of the work performed by him on the issues discussed.

Class attendance is obligatory (two excused absences are allowed). In the event of absence from classes, the student must achieve the assumed educational goals and perform the necessary tasks in accordance with the instructions given by the lecturer. Estimated time to make up for the arrears is 2 weeks.
