Prerequisites (description):

The course is to provide basic knowledge and skills in quantitative and qualitative methods in the study of urban areas and tourism and prepare for independent conceptualization of the problems thesis.

Short description:

The aim of the course is to acquaint the student with the scientific method and chosen quantitative and qualitative research methods applied in socio-economic geography and spatial analysis.

Full description:

The scientific method. The subject and methods of research socio-economic geography. Basic techniques of collecting material. Random sample and drawing techniques. Structured interview and questionnaire. Statistical description. Linear regression and correlation. Multiple regression and correlation. The statistical association of qualitative characteristics. Measures of structure. Spatial analysis of point and linear objects. Classification, typology and regionalization. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis. Basics of qualitative methodology - narrative material analysis, analysis of visual material, conducting in-depth interviews, discourse analysis, elements of ethnomethodology, semiotics space.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course the student:

KNOWLEDGE: knows the basics of the scientific method, methodological orientations of socio-economic geography, methods of quantitative and qualitative research in spatial analysis.

SKILLS: can independently apply appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods to collect and analyze empirical spatial research.

ATTITUDES: critically evaluates the usefulness and potential applications of specific methods and techniques.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

One evaluation includes an assessment of the exercises in quantitative methods (20%) and qualitative methods (20%) and assessment of theoretical knowledge (60%).

Passing classes: attendance (possible two absences, whether excused or unexcused). There are evaluated: the degree of assimilation of knowledge transmitted in the classroom, as well as the ability to interpret the material discussed (part of the final test).

The written examination in the form of a test consisting of 30 tasks (closed and open questions)
