The course is complementary with the parallel lecture 'Contemporary theories in urban studies'.

Holston), planetary urbanization and its criticism (N. Brenner and Ch. Schmid), urban metabolism (M. Gandy), urban political ecology (E. Swyngedouw), gender and the city (F. Tonkiss), creative class and its criticism (R. Florida), new urbanism and its criticism (J. Gehl), the nightmare of participation (M. Miessen), urban movements, new metropolitan mainstream (INURA), place-making.

A practical element of the course will be to familiarize students with the art of academic argumentation, rules of polemics and rhetoric.
