Short description:

The main aim of the course is to gradually prepare students to write appropriately structured academic essays based on sources. The course focuses on developing writing, reading and critical thinking skills and providing students with tools which will enable them to improve the quality of their written work.

Full description:

Classes will be held online using Zoom for synchronous classes and Google Classroom for asynchronous work and submission of essays.

The students will be given a detailed manual on how to use Google Classroom before the beginning of the course.

The following topics will be covered during the course:

1. Introduction to criticality and argumentation in academic writing.

2. Reading long texts and synthesising information.

3. Answering essays questions.

4. Structure and organisation.

5. Avoiding plagiarism (paraphrasing, summarising and referencing).

6. Features of academic writing.

7. Building discipline-specific vocabulary.

8. Expanding the range of structures (focus on chosen grammar aspects).

Bibliography:

All course materials will be provided online via Google Classroom or during live classes on Zoom.

Students will be asked to familiarise themselves with the materials prior to online classes. Detailed instructions for each class will be posted on Google Classroom.

The materials include sample essays, academic articles and worksheets.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will:

- have a better understanding of criticality and argumentation

- be able to identify and use appropriate style and register in academic writing

- be able to write a well-structured academic essay showing a clear position supported with evidence from sources

- have practised ways of avoiding plagiarism

- expanded their range of academic vocabulary and structures

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Formative assessment is an important element of the course. This means that each student will receive extensive feedback on their written work and use it to improve their writing skills.

Students will also receive an overall grade based on their active participation in class and completing homework on time.

Students will need to write two essays which will be graded.

Essay 1 (avoiding plagiarism in the academic context) due on 29.03.21

Essay 2 (topic related to Political Science and International Relations) due on 17.05.21.

Detailed instructions as well as the reading materials will be provided to students well in advance of the deadlines.
